Hiking logs 1998

98#1 Sunday 8 March: Lamma Island (Christine, Dominic, Herbert, Kevin, Lisa, Vannesa)

98#2 Sunday 22 March: Wilson trail #1: Park View to Stanley (Carlo, Cherry, Derek, Dominic)

How was it? It was an exceptionally windy day, the view was fantastic. The first half of the section was not easy, but that didn’t seem to have stopped us from taking on a more challenging path for the second half, so instead of going round the mountain, we decided to go over it. We enjoyed a very nice and rewarding lunch at the ‘Beaches, Stanley’ after the hike.

98#3 Sunday 5 April: Cheung Chau (Carlo, Cherry, Christine, Cynthia, Dominic, Lisa, Mei, Paola, Tony, Vanessa)

Details: Take the ferry from Central to Cheung Chau which takes about 45-60mins, you can enjoy the view while relax on the ferry (or even consume a bowl of instant noodle served in a stylish plastic bowl). We would first visit Pak Tai (North King) Temple, then follow the path along the water front we reach another temple, the Tin Hau (Sky Queen) Temple. The Cheung Pai Tsai's cave is next on the list, for those who are adventurous enough, you could take a look inside what was the hiding place of pirate Cheung Pai Tsai in the 19th Century (you are advised to take a torch with you). Continue the walk back to the pier and we could have a unbeatable seafood dinner at a very reasonable price, and finally take the ferry back to Central.

98#4 Sunday 19 April: MacLehose Trail #6 (Andy, Cherry, Cynthia, Dominic, Paola, Tony, Vanessa)

Details: Option 1: Shing Mun Reservoir to Lead Mine Pass via Needle hill (~8.5km, 3 hrs)

Option 2: Full circle, Shing Mun Reservoir to Lead Mine Pass via Needle hill and back to Shing Mun Reservoir via Pineapple Dam (~11km, 4 hrs) You don't have to make a decision now. We can decide when we get to Lead Mine Pass.

GETTING THERE: From Tusen Wan MTR station take mini bus or taxi to Pineapple Dam.

98#5 Sunday 10 May: Shek O Country Park -- Dragon's back to Shek O (Candy, Carlo, Dominic, Judy, Mei, Michael, Sarah)

Details: 10km, ~2 1/2 hours, very gentle walk. From To Tei Wan, through Dragon's back to Tai Tam Gap, take a look at the Rock Carving before heading to Shek O for lunch. Beautiful views guaranteed. Please bring some water with you.

How was it? The hiking from To Tei Wan to Shek O was very nice, the weather wasn't actually very hot, it varied from warm to foggy to sunny and we had a very lunch served at the stylish restaurant "Black Sheep".

98# 6 Sunday 17 May: Pat Sin Lan NatureTrail -- Tai Mei Tuk to Bride's pool (Andy, Billy, Carlo, Derek, Dominic, Hendrick, Jean, Joyce, Vanessa)

98#7 Sunday 7 June: Pokfulam reservoir to Wah Fu Estate, (Carlo, Candy, Dominic)

Details: Distance: 6km (2hrs) Degree of difficulty: 2 (3 if it has been raining) on a scale of 5 According to the book, you will be surprised that on crowded HK you can find such a secluded and quiet spot. And you will be rewarded with beautiful scenes.

How was it? It only rained lightly for a short period of time last Sunday and that kept the air cool, so the weather was actually perfect for our hike from Pokfulum reservoir to Wah Fu Estate. For this week, I'm not very creative, so I decided to take on a similar route from Pokfulum reservoir to The Peak where we can have afternoon tea or even dinner. Read on!

98#8 Sunday 14 June: Hiking trip #7 Pokfulum reservoir to The Peak (Cherry, Dominic, Carlo, Vanessa, Jean)

I decided to take on a similar route from Pokfulum reservoir to The Peak where we can have afternoon tea or even dinner.

How was it? The 1st half of the walk was very nice with lots of 'small bridge and flowing water' and the path was very gentle. The 2nd half was more challenging as the path was a lot steeper, but a drink in a nice relaxing restaurant at the Peak made all worth it.

98#9 Saturday 27 June: Boat Trip, Queen's Pier, Central, HK (33 people attended)

98#10 Sunday July 12: Lantau Island (Kevin, Andy, Vanessa, Dominic)

Take the new Tung Chung MTR line from Hong Kong (Central) station to Tung Chung and hike our way to Mui Wo and take the ferry back to central. Dinner at Mui Wo optional. Bring water and snacks.

98#11 Saturday July 25: Kite flying at Tai O Mun (Douglas, Nadine, Pauline, Dominic, Carmen, Tony)

98#12 Saturday Sept 26: Sir Cecil's Road, From Quarry Bay to Braemar Hill (Derek, Irene, Cherry, Dominic, Ian, Daniel, Vanessa, Tony, Candy, Albert, Carlo)

How was it? The little hike last week along Sir Cecil's Road, though short was good, refreshing and well attended. The weather was beautiful and it could only improve as we approach the mild winter months.

98#13 Saturday Oct 10: Peng Chau (Albert, Paul, Carlo, Dominic, Candy)

A nice small island which has captured HKers attention lately, thanks to a TVB TV series "Outer Island Cops".

98#14 Sunday Oct 17: Wong Shek Pier to Chek Keng Hau to Tai Long Sai Wan (Dominic, Lisa, Christine, Albert + others)

Details: We take the bus to Wong Shek Pier which will take one hour. Then take the small motor boat from Wong Shek Pier to Chek Keng Hau We will hike one hour and have lunch at 11:30am there at a restaurant. Then we walk for another hour to get to the waterfall. We will either stay at the waterfall or the nearby Tai Long Sai Wan beaches for 1.5 hours. We will start to walk back to Chek Keng Hau at 3:00 or 3:30pm, it's estimated that we will arrive in Chek Keng Hau at 5:30pm. From there we take the motor boat back to Wong Shek Pier. We will take the bus to Sai Kung or Diamond Hill to have dinner there.

98#15 Saturday Oct 31: biking trip from Shatin to Tai Po and back (Irene, Daniel, Pauline + brother, Dominic, Carlo, Albert, Tony)

98#16 Saturday Nov 7: Discovery Bay (Dominic, Judy, David, Cherry C., Amy, Carlo, Jean, Judy Pan )

Details: We would take the ferry to Discovery Bay and hike from there to Silvermine Bay and take the ferry from Mui Wo back to Central.

98#17 Sunday Nov 29: MacLehose Trail section 1, Pak Tam Chung to Long Ke Beach along the High Island Reservoir (Florence, Ami, Irene, Vanessa, Dominic)

Details: We will catch bus 96R from Choi Hung to Pak Tam Chung and starts there. It is a very easy hike, the majority of the path is on tarmac road with a relatively flat profile. The whole route is 10.4km long which takes about 3hrs to complete, but I intend to walk only part of it and then turn back to Pak Tam Chung to catch a bus back to Choi Hung around 6:30pm.
